Angel Shower

Angel shower

One of the most exciting things about being pregnant is having a baby shower, so what happens when you or a friend decides to carry to term after receiving a fatal fetal diagnosis? If you’ve chosen to carry to term, then you probably love your baby very much and want to show him or her, the best life despite the length of that life. Don’t miss out on the wonderful things that pregnancy includes, for the morning sickness, swollen feet, and weight gain, you and your baby deserve a shower, so have an Angel Shower.

Below you can find some of the FAQ about Angel Showers:

What is it?  – If it’s found out a baby suffers from a condition that is incompatible with life, that mother and that baby still deserve an angel shower, which is similar to a baby shower, with a few changes to the theme.

Who should host an angel shower? – It would be wonderful if a close friend or family member did it for the mom to be, but it’s not uncommon for the mom to be to host her own Angel shower

When should an angel shower take place? – Because many, but not all women who carry to term, tend to not make it to 40 wks whether it be in the case of scheduled induction or just God’s will for that baby to be born, angel showers should probably take place anytime between 29-34 weeks.

Who can attend an angel shower? – That is totally up to the mom to be and the host, men and children are welcome to attend Angel Showers

How should we decorate? – Just as you would with any other shower, if the sex of the baby is known you can select gender themed items and colors

What type of games should we play? – You can play standard shower games, but you want to get the ok from the mom to be before, here are some unique and fun suggestions of things to do at an Angel Shower

-          Go around the room and allow the guest to speak strength to the mommy to be by saying wonderful things about her character and strength

-          Take photos with the mommy to be and capture the angel shower for future scrapbooking

-          With washable markers or face paint play decorate the baby bump, don’t forget to take pics

-          To lighten the mood play a fun game like taboo, or Pictionary, laughter is food for the soul and brings peace to your baby

-          Let the mom to be tell her story in the presence of all her friends and family

What type of gift should guest bring? – This is what makes and angel shower so different from a regular baby shower.  The mom to be does not need a stroller, car seat or crib. But someone should be appointed to purchase the simple necessary infant items that even angel babies need.  1-2 baby blanket, 1-2 outfits (the mom to be may want to pick out some items herself, so don’t buy too much) baby booties, baby caps, a special baby bracelet. Most everyone invited will know the situation, but to help prevent inappropriate gifts, a tastefully written note in the invitation should work well, an example: You are aware that our Angel is not expected to live long after birth, but there are meaningful items that will be needed.  Please allow the list below to aid you in your gift buying /making decision (you can always add to these suggestions);  After that you want to entire focus of gifts to be on the mother and family, for either comfort or making special memories here are a list of examples:

-       A digital camera (yes, that is an expensive gift, so is a stroller or car seat; if the mommy to be doesn’t have a DC, consider having a few friends pool money together to get one)

-       Spa, manicure, pedicure gift certificates

-       Restaurant gift certificates, this allows the family to rejoin the real world after their loss, something we all have to do eventually. It also gives them a night off from making dinner

-       Offer your time to babysit if there are older children, type a “you deserve a night out certificate” it works better than words

-       Purchase a “I Have My Very Own Angel” t-shirt from MVOA for the mom to be

-       Those were just a few examples to get you going, be creative and think out of the box. Place yourself in this families shoe and really consider what you would want.
